NexusHaus at the Solar Decathlon

This year was The University of Texas’ fourth time competing in the Solar Decathlon in California. The university-led teams that design, build, and operate the competition’s solar-powered houses are the heart of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.

UT partnered with Technishe Universitaet Muienchen from Germany to build a home that offers a solution to Austin’s own strain on water and electricity infrastructure. A member of the team is Webber Energy Group’s very own, Charles Upshaw, a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering. The University of Texas placed fourth in the competition, the best they have ever done and they came in third place for their engineering due to the house’s innovative energy-water systems.

Upshaw said that “It was a long and difficult project, but I learned a lot of real-world lessons I never would have gotten from school alone, and I am very satisfied with the result.”
