The Hon. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources is co-sponsoring a bill with the Hon. Ron Wyden (D-OR) titled the Nexus of Energy and Water for Sustainability (NEWS) Act of 2014 (S. 1971). Originally introduced in January, the legislation calls for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to establish a committee to coordinate federal energy-water nexus campaigns.
Earlier this year, Senator Murkowski released a white paper in support of the bill titled, The Energy-Water Nexus: Interlinked Resources That Are Vital for Economic Growth and Sustainability, and earlier this week she spoke at the Atlantic Council calling for a public-private approach to water resiliency. Both the white paper and the speech are based in part on a 2012 article by Dr. Michael Webber and Dr. Kelly Twomey Sanders titled, “Evaluating Energy Consumed for Water Use in the U.S.”
The full text of the bill is available online, as well as the archived speech and the white paper. Read more about the bill from the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and from the Atlantic Council.
