Description
Today, there are over 280 metropolitan cities with populations over 1 million people. Including smaller cities and towns, it has been estimated that about half the world's population - roughly 3.3 billion people - live in urban areas today. The UN projects that this will increase to nearly 5 billion people, or about 61% of the world's population, by 2030. This continued population growth coupled with increased per capita consumption will soon require the creation of a new generation of cities in emerging economies and around the globe. Unlike the previous generation of cities built during the Industrial Age, these next generation cities will be built in the Information Age. The demographics of this next generation of inhabitants suggest a socio-cultural desire for on-demand, just-in-time access to resources at affordable costs. Coupled with the increased risks that human growth places on the carrying capacity of the biosphere, including the threat of climate change, we cannot expect to meet the future needs of society simply by extending existing city infrastructures. Simultaneously, it appears that the necessary preconditions exist for a revolutionary transformation in the formation of cities: in addition to population growth, the world has witnessed a definitive increase in per capita productivity over the past decade; the rapid rise of information and communications technologies are enabling optimization of logistics and better access to resources across the world; and a growing interconnectedness is revolutionizing the notion of personal boundaries as well as privacy.
The conditions are ripe for the creation of a new generation of cities, and the Sustainable Ecosystems Research group (SERg) at HP Labs is at the cutting edge of this vision for the future. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated student to further define this vision. The intern will join a team of passionate, interdisciplinary researchers for building a simulation of resource (including material, energy, capital, and species) flows within a city. This will entail reviewing existing literature related to historical resource usage, generating dynamic models of flows within and out of urban environments, correlating patterns of consumption across city infrastructures, modeling the relationship between consumer behavior and resource utilization, and ultimately producing a time-varying visual map of resource flows for a given location. As a stretch goal, the intern will extend this model to further interpret the impact of future demographic and regulatory trends. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to produce tangible research artifacts from their work, including prototypes; internal and external publications; and patents.
